Magharibi House
Frequently Asked Questions
What sorts of payment does Magharibi House accept?
- Like most small businesses in Zanzibar we are on a cash basis. We can easily accept dollars, euros or Tanzanian shillings. Other currencies can be negotiated. Just let us know in advance.
What is the exchange rate of other currencies for Tanzanian shillings?
- It varies, over the past 5 years from a low of about 950 shillings to the dollar to a high of about 1350 shillings to the US dollar. There are lots of good currency converters on the web you can use to predict costs during your stay.
What about carrying money to or changing money in Zanzibar?
- Currency exchange kiosks abound in Stone Town and in Nungwi. Some convert travelers’ checks; some don’t. The safest way is not to carry lots of cash but to bring your credit or debit card. Five major banks in Stone Town have cash machines (ATMs) that dispense shillings. On busy summer weekends though, I have seen them ALL run out of funds, so it’s good to have some cash or travelers checks in reserve.
What is the best malaria prevention?
- Use a bed net always; we do provide them. We also have window screens. If you take prophylactic medication, Malarone, while expensive, is effective and has few side effects. Doxycycline will make you more sun sensitive and can’t be taken by children under 12, but is effective. Stay away from Mefloquine! Makes many people emotionally unstable.
If I do get malaria, how is it treated?
- There are many good drugs for malaria. Among the most effective, inexpensive and with low side effect profiles are artemesia-based compounds like Co-Artem. These are widely available as are places you could be treated should you become ill.
