Budget travelers can take a “sharing bus” that leaves from the Old Fort in town at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., for $10. A private taxi to Nungwi costs about $50.
Travel time from town to Nungwi or most any other point on the island is about an hour.
Not so long ago Nungwi was a sleepy fishing village where sailing dhows and outrigger canoes were built.
Now the gorgeous beaches and crystal blue water host travelers from all over the globe. But the villagers still fish and you can watch them sail by.
The tides are moderate here. You can swim anytime, in Nungwi, day or night, unlike the East Coast of the Island, where the tide goes out for miles, allowing for swimming only at high tides.
Magharibi House is 5 minutes up from the beaches used by the high priced luxury hotels. Close enough to walk but far enough from the noise when the beach gets full of revelers and volleyball players. And far enough to get away from the touts and beach boys.
